Wood and dissolving wood pulp

Responsible wood and pulp sourcing

Wood and the pulp derived from it are the most important source materials for our cellulose fiber production. In line with our Wood and Pulp Policy, we procure wood and pulp only from certified or controlled sustainable sources, defined as non-controversial sources according to the FSC® definition. Our sourcing practices are subject to related due diligence and certification requirements.

Lenzing's sourcing practices

Be it wood sourcing for our own pulp plants or pulp procurement from partners: In both cases we apply the same criteria regarding sustainable forestry. More than 99 percent of the wood used at our own sites and at our partners’ pulp plants is certified or controlled according to recognized sustainability standards, such as FSC® and PEFC. Our suppliers are expected to adhere to social responsibility and human rights requirements aligned with Lenzing’s standards and are subject to our due diligence and supplier management processes.

Lenzing supports the preservation of ancient and endangered forests.
In line with our sourcing policies , we support the preservation of ancient and endangered forest by excluding wood and pulp originating from specified ancient, endangered, or controversial forest areas, including primeval forests in Canada and Russia, the Amazon region, and endangered rainforests in Indonesia and West Africa.

A significant share of our purchased pulp comes from wood grown in the semi-natural forests of Scandinavia, the Baltic States, South Africa, and the USA. Eucalyptus  from certified sources is the predominant ype of wood used by our partners, but beech wood, spruce, birch wood and pinewood from certified or controlled sustainable forest operations are also processed.

Wood from certified or controlled sustainable forestry

For our pulp production in Lenzing (Austria) and Paskov (Czech Republic), we source wood from sustainably managed forests, primarily in Central Europe. Most of the wood originates from the surrounding region or neighboring countries. Our wood sourcing is supported by relationships with forestry stakeholders across the region that have been established and maintained over decades.

For pulp production in Indianópolis (Brazil), we use wood from our own sustainably managed (FSC certified) plantations of our joint venture LD Celulose.

We predominantly purchase wood that is certified or controlled according to recognized sustainability standards, such as FSC® and PEFC. Our wood suppliers are regularly evaluated using a due diligence system based on he FSC® Controlled Wood standard.

As part of sustainable forest management, forest thinning involves the selective removal of trees from young forests to promote the growth, quality, and resilience of the remaining stand. We source significant volumes of wood from these thinning operations for pulp and fiber production.

Where feasible, we source wood from areas close to our pulp mills to help reduce transport distances and prioritize lower-emission transport modes, such as rail, over road transport whenever suitable options are available.

Wood pulp from certified or controlled sources

Wood pulp is produced in our own plants in Lenzing (Austria), Paskov (Czech Republic) and Indianópolis (Brazil). In addition, Lenzing procures dissolving wood pulp on the global market, primarily under long-term supply agreements. In total, Lenzing uses wood pulp for its commercial fiber production from the following pulp sources:

Canopy – in dialog with partners

One of our dialogue partners is Canopy, a Canadian forest conservation organization. Through its CanopyStyle initiative, Canopy collaborates with a broad network of fashion brands, retailers, and suppliers to help protect ancient and endangered forests.

Lenzing supports Canopy’s roadmap through the continuous improvement of its sustainable sourcing practices. In Canopy’s latest Hot Button Report, Lenzing received a “Dark Green Shirt” ranking. According to Canopy’s assessment, this rating reflects strong performance in implementing sourcing practices designed to avoid the use of wood from ancient and endangered forests. The assessment is informed, among other factors, by regular audits conducted as part of the CanopyStyle initiative.
