Better energy for better fibers

ADVANCING BIOENERGY

Manufacturing cellulose fibers requires significant amounts of energy – both process heat and electricity. At Lenzing, we’re transforming this challenge into an opportunity through innovative energy solutions.

Our science-based bioenergy policy combines cutting-edge technology with strategic shifts to renewable energy sources. Through our biorefinery concept and targeted investments in solar, wind, and biomass projects, we’re making measurable progress toward our 2030 goal: Reducing scope 1 and 2 absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 42 percent and scope 3 absolute GHG emissions by 25 percent (baseline 2021). OUR LEVERS

Reduce, improve, remove

Continuous improvement

Efficiency improvements and technology upgrades throughout the Lenzing Group ensure more energy efficient operations at all sites.

Low carbon fuels and renewable energy

We reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and increase our renewable energy share. If we need to buy power, we make sure it’s from renewable sources.

Supplier engagement

We collaborate with key chemical and pulp suppliers to reduce scope 3 emissions, maintain ongoing discussions and share our expertise.

Electrification and new technologies

To drive innovation, we invest in CO₂-neutral technologies like heat pumps − and retrofit existing plants to run on renewable electricity.

Logistics

We implement sustainable logistics and transport systems using break bulk transport, reducing GHG emissions compared to container transport.

Renewable energy for business power

Our strategic shift to renewable energy combines practical innovation with environmental responsibility, creating a robust foundation for future growth.

As we expand our renewable energy mix, we’re not just adapting to change – we’re shaping the future of fiber production.

Recent projects for a greener energy mix

Our commitment to renewable energy comes to life at key production sites. Each initiative represents a carefully planned step toward our climate targets, combining innovative technologies with practical solutions for industrial-scale energy needs.

PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM

Pioneering solar power in Upper Austria

Collaborating with our partner VERBUND, we’ve transformed a former landfill site into Upper Austria’s largest ground-mounted photovoltaic installation. Our innovative “Ofenloch” project demonstrates how industrial sites can be reimagined to generate renewable energy.

Designed with a peak power capacity of 5,560 kWp, this groundbreaking system generates 6,000,000 kWh of electricity annually − cutting our CO₂ emissions by 4,400 tons per year. Complementing this installation, three rooftop systems commissioned in 2022 generate an additional 1,508,000 kWh.

Lenzing channels this power directly into fiber production.

BIOMASS POWER PLANT

Strengthening regional energy

To accelerate our transition to renewable energy, we acquired a biomass power plant for our Heiligenkreuz (Austria) production site in June 2023. This strategic investment exemplifies our commitment to reducing fossil fuel dependency while reinforcing our position as a key industrial employer in the region.

Located directly at our production facility, this power plant harnesses energy exclusively from local biomass sources. Smart integration into our existing infrastructure enables us to cut site-specific CO₂ emissions by approximately 50,000 tons annually − a significant step toward our science-based climate targets.

Beyond environmental benefits, this investment strengthens our operational resilience through greater energy diversification.

WIND POWER PARTNERSHIP

Harnessing wind energy for fiber production

In a forward-looking move to diversify our renewable energy portfolio, we’ve secured a 15-year wind power agreement with WLK energy GmbH. Starting in early 2025, this partnership will deliver approximately 13 megawatts of clean energy to our Lenzing (Austria) site – equivalent to the annual average of 10,000 Austrian households.

Part of a larger wind farm project in Engelhartstetten, featuring eleven turbines, our dedicated share of the total 45-megawatt output will directly support our production needs. This long-term commitment ensures reliable access to renewable energy while contributing to Austria’s sustainable energy landscape.
Through strategic collaborations like this, we’re systematically expanding our renewable energy mix. By securing clean power sources with predictable costs, Lenzing promotes environmental and economic sustainability.

Making every wood molecule count

Our biorefinery concept demonstrates how smart process design creates both environmental and economic advantages.

The secret lies in our holistic approach to wood processing. After extracting the materials for fiber production as well as biorefinery and co-products, we utilize remaining wood components to generate thermal energy and electricity.

We’re working to minimize fossil fuel dependency while maximizing resource efficiency. It’s a practical demonstration of Lenzing’s eco-responsible approach to resource management – and continuous innovation.

Cutting consumption by 26,500 GJ

Small changes can lead to significant improvements − a principle our employees prove every day, on Lenzing’s Innovation Platform. From optimizing hardware usage to reimagining processes, their expertise and creativity spark meaningful energy reductions across our operations.

Take our recent efficiency projects in viscose/modal production at our Lenzing (Austria) site: Employee-driven improvements to ventilation systems, waste gas treatment, and steam regulation for high-vacuum systems, have achieved annual energy savings of 26,500 GJ. That’s equivalent to the yearly energy consumption of 1,470 single-family homes.

When operational expertise meets innovative thinking, we see measurable results. By empowering our teams to identify and implement efficiency improvements, we’re building a culture of sustainable innovation that benefits our partners, our company, and the environment we share.
