Bioenergy from wood and energy efficiency

Thanks to its biorefinery concept implemented at the Lenzing, Paskov and Indianópolis sites, Lenzing ranks among the trailblazers of a potentially energy self-sufficient pulp and fiber production. Lenzing is also developing programs for greater energy efficiency at the other production plants.  

There is no doubt that manufacturing cellulose fibers requires energy, whether this involves process heat or electricity for all the units and machines.

For the most part, the energy requirements of the world’s largest integrated pulp and fiber production plant at the Lenzing site are covered by bioenergy derived from the renewable raw material wood. After the valuable raw materials are extracted from the wood, the rest can be used to generate thermal energy and electricity. This is part of the biorefinery concept of the Lenzing Group. We have optimized this concept to the extent that in total we even produce more bioenergy than we need for pulp and fiber production. A state-of-the-art facility enabling the thermal utilization of residual materials at the Lenzing site is partly responsible for thisresult.

Thanks to the Lenzing biorefinery concept, the Paskov & Indianópolis pulp plants hardly have to purchase any additional energy for pulp production.  

At the other non-integrated Lenzing sites, the energy needed for fiber production is produced from biomass, coal and natural gas. We are continually working on improvements with regard to our energy needs through technological measures and aim to reduce the use of fossil fuels to a minimum
