Lenzing supports children suffering from epidermolyis bullosa
15.12.2006
Already back in 2005 Lenzing AG started to cooperate with debra-austria, the self-help group for children suffering from epidermolysis bullosa. This year the fiber producer again donates EUR 2,000 for eb-haus Austria, a special clinic for affected patients that is financed solely by donations.
The skin of children suffering from this rare and genetically determined disease is as sensitive as a butterfly wing. Minimal mechanical strain causes painful blisters and lesions all over the body. debra-austria was finally able to provide sustained help for the affected children by opening eb-haus Austria last year.
"We as a small self-help group took on a major responsibility by opening eb-haus" explains Rainer Riedl, chairman of debra-austria and father of a suffering child himself. "We have to finance the ongoing costs for the clinic and for research in the coming years as well, as public funds have not been and are still not available." Donations as those by Lenzing help us to cover costs for staff – a medical doctor, a nurse and the small but motivated team of researchers – and material. "On behalf of the affected children I want to express our gratitude for the generous and by now long-term support from Lenzing." Rainer Riedl was happy to declare.
Moreover, Lenzing will continue to support the group with its expertise. TENCEL® is a fiber made by Lenzing which provides particular ease of wear and coolness and offers excellent comfort. Joint research will explore how eb-patients can benefit from this.
A clinical university study by Prof. Dr. Diepgen on patients suffering from neurodermitis and psiorasis and that were wearing TENCEL® produced excellent results. Marked improvement of skin condition was observed in 73 – 84% of the psoriasis patients and 76 – 86% of the neurodermitis patients after only one week of wearing fabrics made from TENCEL® .
Moreover, almost all patients rated ease of wear "significantly better" or "better" than that of their conventional fabrics. Lenzing is optimistic that this expertise can be used to help children suffering from epidermolysis bullosa as well.
