EPG Carbon Precursor
Lenzing produces special polyacrylonitrile fibers in cooperation with European Precursor GmbH – a joint venture of Lenzing, Kelheim Fibres and SGL Carbon. These fibers are the precursor to the production of carbon fibers.
Precursor quality determines carbon fiber quality. Homogenous precursor filaments are required for good processability and the demanded tensile strength of the carbon fibers. The mechanical properties of carbon fibers are used in composite fiber materials, especially in combination with polymers, and recently ceramics. Carbon fibers weigh less than glass fibers and are used in aviation and aerospace, as well as for sports equipment (such as fishing rods, racing bicycles, tennis rackets, speed skates, skiffs and windsurfing) The cockpit of Formula 1 cars is made from carbon fiber enforced polymers.
Archery is another field of application, the shafts of modern sports arrows are made from carbon fibers and their low weight make them best suited for long-distance shots.
