The Lenzing Modal® branding program offers assurance for the whole textile chain

09.06.2006

To give direct customers and the downstream textile chain, namely the fabric producers, garment makers, brands and retailers the assurance that they are using the genuine Lenzing Modal®, Lenzing built up an extensive branding program. This aims to guarantee that the Lenzing Modal® brand continues to stand for quality and should confirm to consumers that when Lenzing Modal® is on a label, Lenzing Modal® is in the product.

The Lenzing Modal® branding program comprises a number of key elements:

1) Fiber definition
2) Fiber identification
3) Fiber characteristics
4) Branding

Fiber definition
Modal is a special generic fiber type defined by International Standard ISO 2076 1999(E). The definition stipulates minimum values concerning the wet modulus and fiber breaking resistance on fiber state. Lenzing Modal® satisfies these requirements. There are other fibers in the market that do not meet these values and are therefore, by definition, not modal fibers and cannot be labeled as such. For this reason Lenzing will take random fabric samples to guarantee the quality of Lenzing Modal® since Lenzing has discovered an increasing number of products in the market place which are in fact labeled as Lenzing Modal®. To counter this, Lenzing is increasingly developing simple methods of identification with independent Test Institutes to guarantee adherence to these standards.

Identification of Lenzing fibers
Since products can be found in the market place which are labeled as Lenzing Modal® but contain other fibers which neither originate from Lenzing nor comply with the modal definition, Lenzing has established a fiber identification system which is based on the examination of fiber parameters.

Guarantee
Lenzing guarantees that all Lenzing Modal® fibers delivered to our spinning customers fulfill the Modal definition and can therefore be labeled as Modal in garments. Lenzing Modal® fibers fulfill ISO 2076 and consequently the FTC rules.
Fabrics or other products containing Modal fibers which are certified according to the Lenzing Certification Process can also be labeled as Lenzing Modal®.

Fiber characteristics
Another secret of the success of Lenzing Modal® is the natural raw material used to make it: beech wood. These trees grow close to the production facility and the entire process from tree to Lenzing Modal® fiber is performed at Lenzing. This is unique in the fiber industry. Thus Lenzing produces the pulp used for the fiber itself and is able to control the entire production process – from wood through to the actual fiber. It is a proven fact that the raw material contributes to the quality of Lenzing Modal® as well as many other characteristic properties. In particular the beech wood used as the raw material makes Lenzing Modal® unmistakable and also functions as a distinctive finger print.

Branding
Lenzing Modal® is a globally protected brand. The quality of textiles of Lenzing Modal® is constantly checked with the help of a certification process. Only certified fabrics are awarded the Lenzing Modal® brand name. Only products which really include Lenzing Modal® can bear the Lenzing Modal® seal of quality. Lenzing takes random samples of the textiles available in the market place and takes legal measures in the event of the abuse of these trademark laws.
